Today’s blog post is an answer to a common question I receive. Why is my Personal Macro Workbook not loading automatically in Excel?. I had this problem recently also. All was going well. Every time I opened Excel, my trusty Personal Macro Workbook loaded up too, until one day it did not.
A while ago, I wrote a blog post about creating and updating your Personal Macro Workbook. If you want to learn more about the workbook, you can read that using the link below.

After some digging around, it seems there are a few reasons for this to happen. I want to share them with you, so you don’t have to manually navigate to the file and manually opened it, as I did for a day or so. So let’s work through the checklist of possible problems and how to fix them.
1. Is Your Workbook Read Only?
The first thing I checked was, is the file set to READ ONLY?. Load up the Personal.xlsb file. Look in the title bar to see if it says READ ONLY. Remove the read-only attribute and try again by starting Excel.
If your problems are solved, you will know once you have reopened Excel. Move onto the next issue if not.
2. Has The Workbook Been Disabled?
Excel may disable the Personal Macro Workbook if it thinks it will not work with Excel or has become corrupted somehow. In Excel 2016, follow the steps below to see if it has become disabled.
- File – Options – Add-Ins
- In the Manage area at the bottom of the screen, select Disabled Items Ins and hit Go
- If your file appears here, then you can enable it again
Consider this a temporary fix, as Excel has, for some reason, disabled it. It probably is corrupted in some way. I suggest you create a new one or restore it from a backup if you want to keep all of your macros stored in your Personal Macro Workbook.
3. Have You Trust Issues?
Thirdly Excel may not trust the directory that holds the Personal Macro Workbook. This directory usually is trusted, but if not, Excel will not load anything contained in it. Check the status to make sure by following the steps below.
- File – Options – Trust Centre
- Open the Trust Centre Settings
- Check that your directory containing your Personal Macro Workbook is located as a trusted location – if not, you need to add it into this area.
