How To Control When Excel Warns You About Large Scale Cell Changes. Excel Tip

Picture this. You are about to make changes to a lot of cells on your Excel worksheet. Maybe you have updated a lot of formulas, or pasted a lot of new cell contents?. Excel sometimes warns you that it is about to make changes to a large number of cells. Do you recognise this warning? You probably do. But like most user, you most likely say ok well thanks for warning me and carry on. Nothing untoward happens generally, its just a polite warning from Excel that you are going to make a lot of changes that may make the system crawl for a while (ok, sometimes it crashes as well). Here is a great Excel tip to change these settings.

Did you know you can control when Excel will display this warning? Yes, there is a setting that controls this threshold of cells being updated before the warning is displayed. Well, the default number of cells is 33,554. That’s right. Did you know that?.

Changing the Default Settings

You can find this setting in the following location (in Excel 2016)
  • File | Options | Advanced | Editing Options |

So you can change this number to one that is either more or less perhaps to suit your needs?. Maybe you want to reduce the threshold of the number of cells to 1000 or increase it to 35000?. Try it for yourself!.
One point to note. This is an application level setting and applies to all Excel workbooks in the session. Did you know about this setting?. I did not until recently so had to share this Excel tip it with you other Excellers!.
